Planes, trains and automobiles … Wow, have I ever been MIA my FB friends! That’s because my food journeys have taken me far and wide across the US and globally. Follow me as I capture their deliciousness and exquisiteness. DAY ONE takes us to Lisbon – THIRD TIME’S A CHARM! Lisbon has presented me with gastronomy par excellence during my past two trips—that’s why delicious Portuguese food and wine beckoned me to inaugurate my northern Atlantic food and wine tour. Not a disappointment if you’re a lover of freshly caught seafood. There are mussels galore, plus the littlest of sardines, simply grilled sea bass (robalo), gilt-head bream (dourada) and salt cod (bacalhau) of many configurations. A mixed bacalhau platter might contain such renditions as salt cod fried with potatoes and onions (bacalhau á bras), baked with potatoes, onions, egg and olives (bacalhau á Gomes Sá), au gratin style (bacalhau com natas) or salt cod fritters (pasteis or pataniscas de bacalhau). Petiscos (Portuguese tapas) abound for smaller appetites. Partner these with any local house Portuguese wine (vinho de Lisboa) such as a white Bucelas or red Colares and you’ll be back time and time again—especially for fado, traditional Portuguese music, from melancholy to upbeat. I’m headed north to Porto. Come taste the port with me!
