Hoops4Health
Hoops4Health aims to positively impact youth by providing a fun learning experience by using basketball, as well as by teaching students how to live a healthy lifestyle off the court. Mind, Body, Nutrition, and Discipline are featured in sessions on Tai Chi, Kung Fu, meditation, and nutrition.
Jacqueline B. Marcus, MS, RD, LD, CNS, FADA, TheFitFoodPro, has taught thenutrition sessions designed for kids ages 6-10 and 11-14. Jacqueline, a nationally recognized sports nutritionist, has worked with the United States Olympics, Pan American Games, and countless athletes, teams and fitness programs.
Session #1 – Foods for Healthy Bodies and Minds
Kids learn about wholesome carbohydrates for energy and brainpower; healthy fats for exercise and health maintenance; lean protein for muscle strength and protection, and the importance of organics to minimize chemical exposure.
Session #2 – Foods and Beverages for Sports
Kids discover how good athletes can be even better by managing their food and beverage intake; which foods and beverages maximize athletic performance; the importance of timing meals and snacks; the value of fluids for good hydration, and which fluids have added health benefits, such as certain fruit juices and green tea.
Session #3 – Healthy Snacks, Fast Food, Caffeine, and Alcohol
Kids see how snacks can fit into a healthy diet; which snacks and beverages are best; the pros and cons of some fast foods; the use and abuse of caffeine; the downside of alcohol, and how athletes need to be “on their game” to be winners at both sports and health.
